In 1987, Fred Valis & Dan Hanks had set up shop in Front Royal, Virginia. They had left Marin County, California after a sting operation which had netted 20 kilos of cocaine and burned their cover. For about a year, Fred and Dan had split up. Dan went to work for the DEA in Miami & Ft Myers, Florida and Fred relocated to Front Royal, Virginia. Now they were back together and doing stings for the Baltimore, Maryland DEA office. It was during that time that the incident related below in Leslie Cockburn's book, "Out of Control", took place |
